Some people prefer using fader automation for this stuff and then 'correcting' the overall gain using Mixtool (or adjusting the whole envelope levels up/down), but I prefer 'leaving the faders loose' and setting them, stationary, at their relative levels, regardless of the volume automation working its magic on the track at the same time (via the Mixtool gain parameter).Īnd now I'm waiting for someone to say there's actually a key modifier to fully and conveniently change the channel level, including automation, even when dragging an automated fader, hehe. If I had all that detail work done as fader automation, adjusting the overall level using the console wouldn't be as convenient. As a project progresses, many tracks already containing automation, I like the freedom of glancing at the main console, readjusting the relative levels, and keeping them there - at times even pulling the faders of some channels down completely and intuitively raising them one by one to fit the overall mix, not having to worry about the automation at all. automated the channel faders for the detail volume work, I would lose the ability to conveniently check and set the faders after the fact. Now, if I used the default volume envelope for this sort of detailed automation, i.e. Attenuate a hit here, add a bit of level there, accent this part of a phrase, pull back on this one, you get the idea basically, some tracks have quite detailed volume envelopes. I usually have quite a lot of volume automation in a project, and some elements might have it abundantly. I like having the channel faders free from automation to see/set the relative levels of all channels when ever I feel like it.
